O’Brien joined hundreds of rank-and-file Amazon Teamsters and New York City elected officials, including Mayor Zohran Mamdani, for a rally at City Hall urging Council Speaker Julie Menin to schedule an immediate vote on the Delivery Protection Act.

The Delivery Protection Act, authored by Councilmember Tiffany Cabán (D-22nd District), would require delivery companies like Amazon to register their facilities with the city and ban subcontracting for last-mile delivery drivers in the five boroughs. Amazon uses a corrupt subcontracting model in which third-party “Delivery Service Partners” shield the company from legal liability while making billions in profit. The bill is supported by a majority of the City Council and Mayor Mamdani.

“Amazon is America’s most corrupt white-collar crime syndicate, wasting millions to rob warehouse workers of the right to collectively bargain while designing a nationwide subcontracting scheme to deny employment rights to its entire fleet of delivery drivers,” O’Brien said. “New York City is a vital artery of Amazon’s global logistics operations, and it must be the first city to pass the Delivery Protection Act. Amazon’s unchecked exploitation of drivers and parcel delivery workers has got to end. The Teamsters are honored to lead the fight to fix a broken system stacked against working people, and we thank Mayor Mamdani, Councilmember Cabán, and the supermajority of the City Council for standing with workers at this critical moment.”

“The workers who deliver packages to our doors in every kind of weather deserve what every worker deserves: a fair paycheck, dignity on the job and a boss who is held accountable for how they treat their employees,” said Mayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani. “Amazon has built a system that lets bosses avoid that responsibility. Drivers are standing up and demanding change. I’m proud to stand with them, the Teamsters and Councilmember Cabán in the fight for the dignity and protections every worker deserves.”

In a desperate attempt to stop the legislation from advancing, Amazon has spent over $8 million to bankroll a dark money campaign against the Delivery Protection Act, its largest lobbying effort in New York City and state history. Amazon workers in New York City have responded with grassroots efforts, including canvassing, leafletting, and phone banking New Yorkers to support the bill.

“Amazon may spend millions against us, but no amount of money they spend is a match for Teamsters power and solidarity,” said Michael Rolon, an Amazon Teamster from the DBK1 facility and member of Teamsters Local 804. “With Mayor Mamdani and a majority of the Council supporting us, the time to pass the Delivery Protection Act is now. We will not rest until Speaker Menin puts the bill up for a vote before the City Council.”

Founded in 1903, the International Brotherhood of Teamsters represents over 1.3 million hardworking people in the U.S., Canada, and Puerto Rico.
